Tour Summary: Arusha/Bivouac/Barronco Hut/Karanga Camp/
The Umbwe is a seldom traveled, steeper, more aggressive route up Kilimanjaro. Designed for those looking for a challenge, this is the trip for you! Once at the Barranco Hut, you can continue on with the other Machame hikers on the South Circuit, but it is often done in conjunction with the Western Breach approach. The descent is down the Mweka trail.

Itinerary
Day 1
Kilimanjaro Airport - Arusha
You will be met upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Impala Hotel. Dinner at leisure not included in the tour price.
Day 2
Arusha - Umbwe Gate - Bivouac I or II Huts
You will be transferred after breakfast with our 4X4 vehicle to the Umbwe Park Gate at 2,100m. The path begins a narrow ridge crest between the Lonzo River to the West and the Umbwe River to the East. It is easy to follow as it continues up through the dense forest. The path continues to follow the ridge, rising steadily with some steep sections and scramble rocks. Dinner and overnight at Bivouac I (9,300ft) or Bivouac II (12,600ft).
Day 3
Bivouac I or II - Barranco Hut
We follow the trail through steep and scramble rock across rainforest to moorland. The path proceed steep to the Southern Glacier Branches, at 4000m we reach our campsite, Barranco, were we overnight. (6-7 hrs).
Day 4
Barranco - Karanga Camp 4,200m
After breakfast you leave the Barranco Hut to ascend a steep ridge, which passes the Barranco Wall in the Karanga Valley at 4,200m, and the trip is far shorter to enable you gain some energy for the final ascent. Evening meal at Karanga. Total walking time around 3 hours.
Day 5
Karanga - Barafu Hut 4,600m
Continue climb to the junction of Karanga / Barafu. Here you meet up with the top part of the Mweka trail and continue up to the Barafu Hut at 4,600m (15,500ft). This is your high camp from where the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen. The rest and evening meal will be very welcome after a walking day of around 3-4 hours.
Day 6
Barafu - Summit - Descend to Mweka Hut 3,100m
SUMMIT DAY: Very early in the morning you make your way slowly up to Stella Point at 5,745m before making the final traverse to the Uhuru Peak, highest point in the continent of Africa, at 5,985m (19,340ft). This ascent will take around 6 hours. Views of the plains and Mount Meru in the early morning sunlight are possible before any cloud drifts up from the steamy jungle below. From the summit you now make your descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut camp at 3,100m. This descent should take around 5 hours and you can take pleasure in a well-deserved rest and final evening meal on the mountain.
Day 7
Mweka Hut - Mweka Gate - Arusha
After breakfast, descend steeply through the forest on a narrow path, after 3 - 4 hours walking we will reach Mweka Gate at 1400m. From here we will bring you to Arusha, Impala Hotel. Dinner at leisure not included in the tour price.
Day 8
Arusha - Kilimanjaro Airport
Transfer after your morning breakfast to Kilimanjaro Airport.
