Kigali

Built on a ridge and extending to the valley floors on both sides, it’s a small, attraction city with an incredible variety of flowering trees and shrubs. Kigali attractively sprawls over a range of slopes in the heart of the “Land of a thousand Hills”. Peaceful, tree-lined residential streets stretch up and down the city’s heart, giving visitors ample scope for strolling.

From various points on the ridge, there are superb views over the intensively cultivated and terraced countryside. The mountains and the hills seem to stretch forever and the abundant rainfall keeps them a lush green.

Kigali City, which started in 1907 as a small colonial outpost with little link to the outside world, is now an advanced and well built city. A significant amount of damage was done to the city during the genocide in 1994, but massive rehabilitation work has been undertaken in recent years and there is quite a construction boom in the city centre today. It feels like a city on the move looking ahead to development rather than looking back at its destruction.

The City of Kigali is not only the National Capital, but also the country’s most important business centre and main port of entry. The city is also easily connected to neighbouring Uganda and Burundi by fully surfaced roads. The Rwandan capital provides both a comfortable and welcoming introduction to this land of a thousand hills and an ideal springboard from which to explore this magical country. Kigali city is made up of three districts namely Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge.
The city has a good range of hotels and restaurants to suit every budget, and it is worth sampling at the weekend. Many of the most popular places are spread throughout the extensive suburbs that surround the city.

Kigali is among the safest and friendliest African Capitals. Excursions in and around Kigali offer a first impression of what Rwanda looks like. The many hills seem to stretch forever, usually featuring a lush green colour due to the abundant rainfall from the two main rainy seasons. Take in one or two of the genocide memorials, which although extremely disturbing, are an educational reminder of the evil that visited the land. The two most famous of these memorials are at Nyamata and Ntarama, both within an hour’s drive of Kigali. There is the national genocide memorial a short distance from Kigali at Gisozi.
