Tour Summary: Kigali/ Kinigi/Kigali
This is a 5 days tour of tracking mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The tour takes you to Kinigi where you get to track mountain gorillas at the Parc National des Volcans. You can also track one of the 2 golden monkeys groups, visit Karisoke Centre, Dyane Fossey’s grave, hike Bisoke volcano, drive toward Lake Kivu and along the Bulera and Ruhondo lakes, then end the tour by visiting the Genocide Mausoleum.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival
Meet on arrival at the airport. Transfer to the hotel in town. Overnight: Serena Kigali Hotel.
Day 2
Kigali – Kinigi - Mountain Gorillas
After an early breakfast at 4.30, leave Kigali at 5.00 for a 2 hour-drive to arrive at Kinigi as the first light of dawn breaks through the curtain of mist clinging to the summits of Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyniyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. Meet the park authorities and make our way into the Parc National des Volcans. Tracking the gorillas through the unique vegetation can take several hours of challenging walking in wet and muddy conditions. To see a gorilla, the trek will have been worth the hardship. Overnight at Virunga Lodge.
Day 2 & 3
Mountain Gorillas Tracking
Track a second time the mountain gorilla. Overnight at Virunga Lodge.
Day 4
Golden Monkeys – Karisoke Center – Bisoke Volcano – Kivu, Bulera, Ruhondo Lakes
Today you have several options. Either track one of the 2 golden monkeys groups, or have a walk to Karisoke Centre and Dyane Fossey’s grave or hike Bisoke volcano to reach its crater lake, or drive toward Lake Kivu and along the Bulera and Ruhondo lakes. In the late afternoon drive back to Kigali. Overnight at Serena Kigali Hotel.
Day 5
Departure
After breakfast relax at your hotel or visit the Genocide Mausoleum. Transfer to the airport for your connection flight.

GENERAL INFORMATION

 

GORILLA TICKETS: They are in high demand and need to be booked and paid in advance. Buy your gorilla safari accordingly and avoid any disappointment.

GORILLA RULES: Eco-tourism is nature-based tourism that meets conservation objectives. Gorilla tourism depends largely on the conservation of these magnificent animals. Some rules have been developed to protect the gorillas and the park rangers will brief you before the trekking. Please respect them.

GORILLA GROUPS: Only the park authorities will assign your gorilla group.

  • Group 13 with 7 individuals located at Sabinyio volcano
  • Amohoro  group with 11 gorillas located at the Bisoke volcano
  • Umubano group with 10 individuals located between Sabinyio and Bisoke volcanoes
  • Sabinyio group with 13 individuals located between Sabinyio and Bisoke volcanoes
  • Susa group, 35 gorillas located on the Karisimbi volcano. Longer trekking distance
  • Hirwa group, a group of nine gorillas on the northern slope of Sabinyio volcano

WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU

  • Money for your personal expenses: usd or euro
  • Good walking shoes, rain gear, gloves (nettle stings), some long-sleeve shirts, sweaters for the cool evenings
  • Sun protection gear and cream and mosquito repellent
  • Video and photo cameras. 200/300 mm telephoto lenses are very useful. Reserve batteries or battery charger (mains and/or 12 V car adaptors), normal and some high speed (800 – 1,000 ASA) films
  • Binoculars, a torch, a small rucksack
  • International vaccination card

SECURITY: After the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has stabilised. Democratic elections have been hold, and Rwanda is one of the most stable and safe African countries.

INOCULATIONS: Valid yellow fever inoculation is required. Ask your physician for malaria protection.

VISA: A valid passport is mandatory. Visa rules have to be checked with the authorities. If visa is required, you will need a single entry visa.

SAFARI GUIDE: Your guide is an experienced person speaking English and several local languages. He will be with you from the beginning to the end.
